Increase in Barcelona’s Tourist Tax: How, When, and Why?
Barcelona’s tourist tax is a levy applied to stays in tourist accommodation. It was introduced in 2012, but its amount has changed over the years, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, the tourist tax increased again, and this became one of the most controversial topics in Barcelona.
Today, a traveler staying in a tourist apartment must pay €9.50 + 10% VAT per day. This tax is capped at a maximum of seven days per person, as long as the stay is continuous and in the same accommodation. In addition, minors under the age of 17 are exempt from paying it.
The truth is that, whether we like it or not, the tourist tax is mandatory and a reality we must adapt to. Let us explain a bit more so that you have no doubts.
When does the €9.50 tax start to apply?
From April 1, 2026.
Who pays the tourist tax?
The guest must pay this tax to the property owner/property manager before arriving at the apartment. The amount is then transferred to the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Therefore, the tourist tax must appear within the final price charged to guests. It must be clearly itemized and shown separately on the invoice. The invoice should indicate, separately, the cost of the service itself and the amount of the tax. It should also specify the days or fractions thereof to which it applies, as well as the type of tax charged. Remember: it is charged per person, per night, for a maximum of 7 nights.
In this way, the tourist tax is charged to guests. However, ultimately, it is the responsibility of whoever manages the property to comply with the regulations and submit the corresponding tax filings.
Why did the tourist tax increase?
The purpose of the increase is to focus on and attract high-quality tourism.
This measure is therefore part of an effort to improve the city and the quality of life of its residents. The goal is to preserve and develop tourist attractions in order to enhance the experience of those visiting the city.

One of the most common mistakes is booking based only on price or on the name of the neighbourhood, without considering the kind of trip you are planning. For a short break, a central area is usually worth it; for a quieter stay, it often makes sense to move slightly away from the busiest tourist circuit. It also helps to check carefully how well connected the area is to the places you are most interested in visiting.
